FOCUS | Lulu Jackson Bridal Update

Back in 2021 we caught up with local bridal designer Lulu Jackson on her growing custom bridal label.
3 years (and over 100 dresses) later, we catch up with the talented but humble designer on what she has been creating.

WE SPOKE TO YOU BACK IN 2022, TELL US ABOUT WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR LJB SINCE THEN?

When we last spoke I think we were just coming off the back of Covid so things were a little slow for a while, but as soon as the wedding industry was up and running again I started making a lot of wedding dresses. Word of mouth from all my lovely brides really helped my business to grow, however I am still running LJB myself out of a small atelier based in the Bay Of Plenty. I have now made over 100 custom wedding dresses and have also started catering to international brides too.

TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU OFFER NOW FOR LJ BRIDES?

Currently, all of my dresses are custom designed and made from scratch for each customer. LJB is not your usual bridal boutique, it is a simple, small scale design and production operation where all garments are made in house by me for the customer. I am working on a wee range which I’m hoping to launch some time over the winter!

ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES WORKING WITH YOU?

It's a super fun and collaborative process! I think I do things a little differently. I don’t follow any strict process or timeframes. My consultations are really casual chats, free of charge and with no obligations. My atelier is a relaxed, humble space where magic happens. I don’t like to put any sort of pressure on my brides, I try to cater to their specific needs and I think they find that really refreshing. LJ Bride's put all their trust in me, only seeing their dress become a reality at the sample stage - so they have to be really comfortable with that way of doing things.

ANYTHING YOU ARE LOVING IN THE SPACE RIGHT NOW?

Interchangeable wedding “wardrobes" or garments which can be worn in fun, versatile - and practical - ways, and hopefully worn again after the wedding day! Think a fitted corset bodice worn with an extravagant full skirt for the ceremony, and a cute fun mini skirt to change into later in the evening. A detachable bow with long trailing ties in lieu of a veil. Sheer over layers. A simple gown with big full, romantic sleeves which can be removed when the bride sits down to dinner. I’m thinking out loud!

ANYTHING EXCITING YOU HAVE IN THE PIPELINE FOR LJ BRIDES?

YES! I am working on a small range of styles for customers to be able to browse, try on, and purchase as is or with small customisations. I think a customisable range would help to show brides what LJ Bridal is all about, and provide a tangible starting point to craft the dress of their dreams.
